What’s On Your Playlist?

I have fond memories of my dad sharing his love of music with my sister and I when we were younger.  My dad worked the midnight shift at Chrysler. So on Saturday mornings when he came home from work we would have a Soul Train Dance Line.  I was always afraid to touch his album collection, let alone his record player.  He would play his jams first.  But I remember that we could always make a request for a song.  Our dance party went on for at least an hour.

The dance party was in our basement.  Our basement had tiled mirrors everywhere, a bar area, rock water fountain, a disco ball and an oil hanging light.  You know the one I am talking about. I think this was my dad’s time to unwind from a twelve-hour work shift.  My sister and I enjoyed this time with our dad.  Sometimes we would get mommy to join us.  But she was always cleaning or sewing something.

We danced and listened to The OJays, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Wonder,  and The Doobie Brothers.  This list goes on and on.  We would sing all of the Motown tunes, The Beetles you name it.  I think that is why I love dancing so much today.  When all hell breaks loose my kids and I just dance it off. We’ve been known to dance it out in the waiting rooms at doctor’s appointments.  Complete strangers have even been known to join us.  The dancing would relax Sydney and sometimes embarrass Harrison. But it worked. Today I must admit that I am not up on all of the latest songs.  I’ll ask my niece Kayla to tell me the name of a song, as I sing and make up the words.  She just looks at me and smiles.  Then she says “Auntie, that song was from last year.” So I want to share with you my playlist of songs that I have jammed to over the past three years. Don’t Judge!

DJ play that song so I can get my groove on! Dance it out!

  1. I forgot to post my summer jams this year, but they include, “Sundress’ by Coco Brown, “Summertime” by Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff and of course the classic, “Under the Boardwalk” by The Drifters.
